Texas earned the nickname “Lone Star State” in 1836, when Texan troops defeated the Mexican army and the state declared its independence. It was then that the Texas Congress approved the flag of this state - a red, white and blue banner with a large star. For ten years, Texas remained a separate state with a republican form of government, with its own government and congress, until in 1845 it became part of the United States as a state.

“Over and over again, we have seen a complete disconnect between the people of Texas, what they want, and what is happening in Washington,” said Texas Nationalist Movement President Daniel Miller. “The people of Texas have nothing against the United States, they are simply tired of officials they didn’t elect and laws they don’t want.”

Miller compared Texas to Scotland, whose citizens have repeatedly raised the issue of leaving the UK, and to Catalonia, which also wants independence from Spain. “We live in an era of the right to political self-determination,” he said.

However, with Texas self-determination there is a slight problem. When Texas, together with other southern states, became part of the United States, each state government made a solemn promise never to leave this Union.

Thus, to approximate the intended goal, the state government must first change the Texas legislation, then convince the US Congress to approve it, and only after that the people of Texas will have the right to self-determination.

Curiously, as an independent state, Texas can become quite an influential country on the world stage. The state economy is 1,4 trillion dollars a year, which roughly corresponds to the economy of South Korea or Spain, five times more than the economy of Israel and only slightly inferior to Canada or Russia.
