In the US, another drug turned out to be in bottles with a medicine for hypertension: the manufacturer conducts a review

A potentially “life-threatening” labeling mix-up has led to a statewide recall of a popular high blood pressure drug, hydrochlorothiazide.

Pharmaceutical company Accord Healthcare voluntarily withdraws a batch of hydrochlorothiazide tablets (12,5 milligrams), after one of the pharmacies reported that one of the bottles of the drug actually contained spironolactone tablets, writes Time.

The rest of the batch (PW05264) was withdrawn due to a “possible labeling error.” In Accord Healthcare clarified that other drugs contained the claimed composition.

Both hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone can be used to treat high blood pressure, but spironolactone causes the body to get rid of excess water and sodium and store potassium, and patients mistakenly taking it instead of hydrochlorothiazide may experience hyperkalemia (elevated potassium). The effects of hyperkalemia range from minor discomfort to life threatening in some cases.

According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), no patients have reported side effects related to this recall. Those using Accord Healthcare Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets should ensure that the tablets in the package they purchase are light orange in color with the letter H on one side and the number 1 on the other.

Consumers are advised to report to the FDA if the tablets they take do not fit this description, or to consult with their pharmacist.
