Doctors from the Boston Children's Hospital have developed a revolutionary transplant technique, which can give babies with heart defects a chance for a normal healthy life.

At the same time, children do not need new organs. Doctors transplant mitochondria from the child’s own muscle cells directly into their dying heart - and this experimental procedure shows record results, writes “Popular mechanics"with a link to an article from The New York Times.

Every cell in our body contains mitochondria. These are specialized organelles that provide the cell with energy. If a cell loses the influx of oxygen-enriched blood, then the mitochondria can die, and with it the rest of the cell. Such damage to mitochondria can occur during a heart attack or a surgical operation designed to correct heart failure. Even if the cells survive, they will weaken, and as a result, the heart will no longer beat normally.

The study was led by Dr. James McCully. In the course of his experiments, he introduced the mitochondria of their muscle cells of the same pig into the damaged but not dead pig heart, and as a result, the animal's heart fully recovered.

The human trial began in 2015, when a mitochondrial transplant was injected into a newborn with a heart that was damaged during surgery. Makkali took approximately 1 a billion mitochondria from a small area in the baby’s stomach and injected them into the damaged part of the heart. After two days, my heart began to beat quite normally and without interruption.

In general, doctors have already performed a similar procedure on 11 newborns, and eight of them have fully recovered. In infants with a similar disease who could not receive a donor heart, the mortality rate was about 65%, while no one has fully restored heart function. Therefore, a new procedure can help children who otherwise simply have no choice.

In the 2019 year, doctors plan to move to adult testing to finally see how effective the new technique is.

Earlier it was reported that biologists from the US National Institute of Aging in Bethesda have created a drug that selects the aging cells of the animal and destroys them, increasing its survival by about 36 percent.
