The Republican-controlled House of Representatives on Thursday took an important step toward tax reform, voting in favor of tax cuts for corporations and individuals.

Earlier on Thursday, on the eve of the vote, President Trump once again called for a large-scale tax law reform and met with Republicans from the House of Representatives, writes "Voice of America".

Before the vote, legislators were addressed by Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan, who called tax reform "the biggest historical matter we will do."

Republican leaders are optimistic about their chances of gaining enough votes to pass a bill providing for reduction tax for corporations with 35%, one of the highest rates in the world, to 20%, as well as tax cuts for millions of middle-class tax payers, but not for the entire population. This initiative will increase the country's long-term debt, amounting to 20 trillions of dollars, by another 1,5 trillion.

Democrats oppose Republican attempts to cut taxes, insisting that it will be beneficial to the richest taxpayers, but will not help those who earn much less. The changes under consideration will affect almost all taxpayers, but so far the outlines of the initiative are so vague that many cannot figure out whether taxes will become lower for them.

Democrats and some Republicans oppose the inclusion of this provision in the tax bill, and if it remains in the text, it may reduce the chances of success of the tax initiative, especially in the Senate.
