Over the past six months, the US has accepted only white refugees from South Africa; those from other countries are not given asylum.

According to data from the US State Department's Bureau of Population Affairs released on June 5, all 599 refugees accepted by the US last month were white South Africans, the publication writes. Mother Jones.

A similar picture is observed for all other refugees admitted during the year. Since October 1, 2025, the United States has accepted 6668 refugees. Of these, 6665 were white South Africans. Another three, admitted last November, came from Afghanistan. Refugees from other countries were not accepted at all.

These data are supported by the US Refugee Admissions Program, a federal interagency agency that resettles refugees with the participation of the private sector.

In October, the Donald Trump administration announced it would cut the annual refugee quota to 7500, with plans to make almost all of them white.

The country, long considered a haven for migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, has historically accepted significantly more people from around the world. The Trump administration's new figures stand in stark contrast to previous years: for fiscal years 2022–2024, under the Joe Biden administration, the annual cap was 125. This figure is consistent with long-standing practice.

The September presidential memo outlined the administration's intentions: that refugees should be "primarily Afrikaners from South Africa" ​​and "other victims of illegal or unjust discrimination in their countries."

The Trump administration views Afrikaners (an ethnic group in South Africa descended primarily from European settlers) as victims of so-called white genocide, a concept that critics call a racist conspiracy theory and has been promoted by some on the far right, including Elon Musk.

In May, the US increased its quota for white South Africans by another 10,000, bringing the quota to 17,500. Authorities attributed this to "unforeseen events in South Africa," which allegedly created a refugee emergency. Among these events were raids by South African immigration officials on a US resettlement processing center. During these raids, seven Kenyan citizens were detained and accused of illegally working at the facility.

A South African Foreign Ministry spokesman told The New York Times that same month that the resettlement of South Africans to the United States under the guise of "refugees" was purely political in nature and aimed at calling into question the country's constitutional democracy.

As journalist Noah Lanard previously wrote, the White House stopped aid to South Africa based on unfounded allegations of discrimination against the white population.

The State Department estimates that resettling an additional 10 Afrikaners will cost approximately $100 million.

Critics say it's another example of the Trump administration making a show of determining who it thinks deserves aid and protection and who doesn't.
