Americans warned against hand dryers

According to scientific research, every time we wash an open toilet, fecal matter rises into the air - a phenomenon known as the “toilet trail”. This is especially important when washing hands in public toilets, especially in hospitals where germs affect a weakened immune system.

The best thing you can do is remove the hand dryers. A recent study showed that there are five times more bacteria in a restroom where a hand dryer is located than where paper towels are used.

Research published in the journal Hospital Infection claims that hospitals should avoid such powerful dryers to combat the spread of bacteria.

“When people use a jet air dryer, germs are blown away and spread around the washroom,” said Mark Wilcox, a microbiologist at the University of Leeds who oversaw the study. “Essentially, the dryer creates an aerosol that contaminates the restroom, including the dryer itself and possibly sinks, floors and other surfaces, depending on the dryer design and location.”

Studies were conducted in three hospitals in England, France and Italy, which alternated the use of dryers and paper towels. Every day, researchers measured the level of bacteria in the air, the floor, and the surfaces, focusing on bacteria for serious infections.

In the bathrooms, where jet dryers were installed, there are noticeably more germs than with paper towels.

Another study this year at the University of Connecticut also showed that hand dryers contributed to the spread of bacteria on campus.
