On Saturday around 7 in the morning, dozens of people in Burmilville, Georgia, woke up when police knocked on their door with a message about an emergency evacuation. The reason for this was a crash on the bridge of a train carrying propane.
The accident occurred on the Highway 90, resulting in some 30 car overturned.
Everyone within half a mile was ordered to evacuate.
"We were running around screaming 'damn it,' and then we had to rush to get out of the house," recalls Skylar Towns, who lives just steps from the train tracks.
After the evacuation of residents, CSX Transportation sent a team to check the air for concentration of propane in it. The results were negative.
"We'll have to do an inspection of the bridge and do it again... maybe in four to five days while the highway is closed," Dooley County Sheriff Craig Peavey said.
Crews from CSX vehicles, Georgia Power and the Georgia Department of Transportation began cleaning up on Saturday afternoon, while CSX continued to investigate the cause of the accident.
Residents who had to evacuate were able to return home in a few hours. However, those who live near the railway do not have electricity.
Georgia Power had to remove several power lines so that rescuers could clear the area of the accident. This may take several days. All cars are now diverted through the State Route 27 in Venne, then to the State Route 230 in Burrowville, and then to the State Route 90.
A detour will be relevant for at least a few weeks.
