Lettuce contaminated with Listeria is recalled in the United States: it was sold in popular retail chains
Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. is voluntarily recalling dozens of prepackaged salads due to "possible health risks," reports USAToday.
The recall came a few weeks after a similar recall in December and October.
According to the January 7 revocation notice posted on the FDA's website, the products affected are Dole-branded and private label packaged salads that are produced at its manufacturing facilities in Springfield, Ohio and Soledad, California.
Consumers are encouraged to throw away the recalled products and not eat them. Affected store brands include Walmart's Marketside, Aldi's Little Salad Bar, Kroger, and HEB. Certain President's Choice products sold in Canada are also subject to recall.
A list of affected products is posted on the websites FDA и Dole.
In a December recall, Dole officials said the salads processed in the two factories were unharmed.
They argue that no recall diseases have been reported to date. However, consumers are encouraged to throw away the recalled products and not eat them.
"The recall is after Dole inspected the harvesting equipment for the raw iceberg lettuce used in these finished products and found it contained Listeria monocytogenes," the company said in a notice.
Listeria causes fever, nausea, and other types of symptoms commonly associated with foodborne illness, but it can be fatal in young children, the elderly, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. It has also been linked to miscarriages and stillbirths.
Dole said that "no other Dole products, including fresh fruit and fresh vegetables packaged in the field, are part of these voluntary reviews and are safe to consume."
