Fabric softener may contain ethylene oxide
According to The Laundress recall page, fabric care products may contain cancer-causing chemicals.
“The recalled products may contain a chemical impurity, ethylene oxide, a carcinogen that can cause adverse health effects through significant and direct long-term exposure,” reads the page recall.
On The Laundress FAQ page, the company stated that the chemical is "not intentionally added" to the liquid.
“This is an impurity found during the production of certain raw materials that must be maintained as low as reasonably achievable,” the company wrote. “Our review indicated that it may be present in the raw materials we used specifically to make The Laundress fabric softeners.”
According to the National Cancer Institute, ethylene oxide exposure is most commonly associated with lymphoma and leukemia, but may also be associated with stomach and breast cancer. If you have health concerns, The Laundress recommends that you contact your doctor directly.

At the end of last year, the company already announced a major recall of 8 million washing powders and household chemicals.
They were recalled due to potential bacterial contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex, Klebsiella aerogenes, and several different Pseudomonas species, which are especially dangerous to immunocompromised consumers and people with underlying lung diseases or external medical devices, according to a Dec. 1 notice from the CPSC. Those with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by these bacteria.
Testing has identified the bacteria "in some of the recalled products," especially those manufactured between January 2021 and September 2022, CPSC said. The full list of recalled products is available on the recall page.
Fabric softeners recalled on March 31 were included in the first recall, CPSC said, and the new notice formalizes the recall of those products from the market.
