US recalls ground beef: E. coli found in it
Routine testing revealed the presence of E. coli in a sample of ground beef from more than a ton of boneless ground beef from Elkhorn Valley Packing, a Kansas meat packer, reports USAToday.

The USDA said the packer is voluntarily recalling a 1,7 tonne product that was packaged on February 16 and shipped to distributors, retailers, restaurants, hotels and other establishments in nine states:
- Connecticut
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New Jersey
- New York
- Pennsylvania

E. coli produces Shiga toxin
The strain of E. coli found in USDA testing produces Shiga toxin and is called STEC O103. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people infected with this strain experience diarrhea and vomiting. Most people recover within a week. Antibiotics are not needed for treatment, but hydration and other supportive care is recommended, according to the CDC.

A complete list of affected product serial numbers can be viewed here. There are no reports of illness associated with the recall, according to the Department.
