US recalls ground beef due to E. coli contamination: it was sold at Walmart, Kroger and Albertsons

More than 28 pounds (000 kg) of ground beef, including packs sold in select Walmart stores, are being recalled for possible E. coli contamination. Writes about it USA Today.

Meat company Interstate Meat Dist. Inc. (Oregon) is recalling products manufactured on December 20 as they may be contaminated with E. coli O157: H7.

The products were sold at Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons and WinCo Foods stores. According to the recall notice, the products were shipped to retail locations in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

However, the affected products appear to be marketed in more than seven states listed in the recall notice.

Walmart posted a 13-page list of stores on its website that sold the recalled meat, including stores in seven states, as well as Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho and Montana.

Kroger said the recall affects one- and three-pound packages of ground beef, 93% of which are sold at Fred Meyer stores.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), E. coli can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps three to four days after exposure, and potentially kidney failure in children under 5 and in the elderly.

The USDA classified the announcement as a "Class I" recall, which it defines as "a hazardous to health situation where there is a reasonable likelihood that the use of a product will cause serious, adverse health effects or death."

Consumers who have purchased the affected “products are strongly advised not to consume them,” the revocation notice says, adding that the products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Call Interstate Meat Dist., Inc. for more information. by phone 503-656-6168.
