US recalls infant formula because it may be contaminated with bacteria dangerous to babies

Gerber is recalling its infant formula due to possible contamination with bacteria that can cause serious illness in babies, reports CNN.

The blend has been distributed to some US retailers even after the initial notice, according to a release released by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to communication, the Irish company Perrigo, which first announced recall in March “out of precaution,” stated that some products may be contaminated with the pathogenic bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii.

The recall affects Gerber Good Start SoothePro Powdered Infant Formula and applies to products manufactured between January 2-18 at the company's Eau Claire, Wisconsin facility.

One of the recalled products was sent to the retailers of Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc. in Nashville, a cooperative wholesale distributor, following an initial recall notice dated March 17, according to communication company provided by the FDA.

Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc independent retailers in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia received a 12,4-ounce version of infant formula after that date.

“Consumers who have purchased this product … in these states are strongly encouraged to test any product they may have in their home,” Perrigo said in a May 14 statement. Those with any of the recalled formulas should not use it.

According to the press release, Perrigo has not reported any products that have tested positive for bacteria or any related illnesses.

Dangerous for babies

On According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, although Cronobacter sakazakii does not cause symptoms in most people, a microbe commonly found in the environment can cause potentially fatal infections in infants.

Bacteria can live in dry foods such as powdered infant formula, milk powder, starches and herbal teas.
