December 19 in the United States officially lifted the 3 year-long moratorium on the development of deadly viruses.
National Institute of Health will again be allocated funds to continue research aimed at creating substances that can quickly infect the human body and lead to death. The New York Times.
The goal of the program is to create deadly microbes and viruses, further study them, identify possible mutation scenarios and improve existing viruses. In addition, the program provides for the creation of new vaccines against the most serious diseases affecting humanity.
According to the head of the National Institute of Health, Dr. Francis Collins, the benefits of these studies are much greater than the risk, because they give a chance to create a vaccine against many dangerous diseases.
At the same time, opponents of the program believe that scientists can develop a monstrous virus that at some point can get out of control and cause a deadly pandemic with numerous victims.
However, researchers at the National Institute of Health emphasize that there is no such threat, assuring that they will proceed to research only after the high degree of safety of the facilities where they will be conducted will be confirmed.
A moratorium on the development of deadly viruses was introduced in 2014 after several emergencies. The most serious of these was the infection of employees of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention anthrax during the study of the virus. In addition, in the laboratory of the National Institute of Health, several bottles of frozen smallpox were accidentally discovered, which were forgotten for 50 years. But authorities argue that such violations will now become impossible.
