Jeff Zientes, White House COVID-19 Coordinator, said Wednesday that the US government has purchased 10 million paxloid treatments, of which 265 will be available to Americans in January. According to Pfizer, it takes 000-6 months to make tablets.

“The Pfizer team offers a very promising and now approved treatment. The pills dramatically reduce the likelihood of hospitalization and death for those at risk,” Zients said.

The tablet is easier to deliver, but requires a prescription and is a 5-day course. Studies show that the medicine works best within 5 days from the onset of symptoms, and is not effective at all after 7 days. Some hospitals and pharmacies are working to reduce the time between a positive test, receiving a prescription and accessing the pills.

Antiviral drugs have become more important in recent days as the omicron variant replaced the delta. The two most commonly used monoclonal antibodies, which help prevent severe disease, will not be effective against omicron, although a third, sotrovimab from GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology, is still effective.
