In the US, recruiting volunteers to test the Zika virus vaccine
31 March The US National Institutes of Health announced they were recruiting volunteers for the next phase of testing an experimental DNA vaccine to counteract Zika virus.
This is a completely new type of vaccine, reports Share America.
Traditionally, vaccines are made using a dead or attenuated virus to train the body’s immune system to recognize and combat this infection.
Scientists are also testing more traditional versions of Zika virus vaccines, which are easier to manufacture, but the DNA vaccine first showed successful results in the first stage and is ready for the transition to the second stage of testing.
The first volunteer was vaccinated on 29 March in Houston, Texas. Scientists are preparing for the 2 research of thousands of people in the United States and Brazil, as well as Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and Peru.
The Zika virus epidemic has affected some parts of Latin America and the Caribbean, and the virus continues to spread to other countries.
Researchers hope to get an idea of how effective the vaccine is by the beginning of 2018.
