San Francisco created a “board of shame” for Airbnb landlords

In the past few weeks, fliers have begun appearing in San Francisco's Chinatown with photos of Airbnb hosts and messages that these people are "destroying affordable housing for immigrants, minorities and low-income families."

In total, on such leaflets, while the names and photos of the 12 were recorded, a person writes The Guardian.

“This action is an expression of how the community is increasingly being exploited by speculators and unscrupulous players in the housing market,” said City Supervisor Aaron Peskin.

“There is no doubt that there are many illegal short-term rentals throughout the city and in Chinatown in particular,” he added.

In 1980, tough laws were enforced in San Francisco that allowed immigrants or people with low incomes to rent low-cost housing.

Now, thanks to the services of private rental housing, many bypass this rule. Moreover, the cost of renting low-cost housing with shared kitchens and sanitary facilities for immigrants increased from $ 610 in 2013 to $ 970 per month in 2015. These numbers look very tempting in a city where the average rental price is $ 3 907 per month. But, nevertheless, such prices are often not affordable for newly arrived immigrants in Chinatown.

Some of the landlords whose photos are on the leaflet have already announced their intention to go to the police and punish the creator of the leaflets, because, according to them, the information on the posters is not true.

Some of the “heroes” of the leaflets were skeptical of the situation, saying that they understand the problem with the prices for rental housing in the city, but they do not at all know how leaflets can solve this situation.
