In San Francisco, police robots were allowed to kill people

New rules in San Francisco will allow police to use robots to kill people if they have no other choice, reports Independent.

Local legislators initially tried to impose restrictions on the killing of people with the help of robots. “Robots should not be used as a means of using force against anyone,” read the original manual.

But then the police crossed out that clause and replaced it with a manual that allowed the use of killer robots. “They will only be used as a deadly force when the risk of death to members of the public or officers is imminent and outweighs any other force option available to the SFPD,” the new version says.

The new policy has been approved by the Local Rules Committee and will be voted on by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors next week.

This will be the first time that a decision has been made in San Francisco to use lethal force by robots. The police do not yet have robots that are clearly used as weapons, and they have never attacked anyone.

But other forces still used robots to kill people. The first example of such an event in the US occurred in 2016, when Dallas police attached explosives to a robot and used it to kill a sniper who had shot dead five officers.

The SFPD has access to one of the same robots used in that operation, the Remotec F5A. Officially, it is intended for the disposal of explosives and is not designed for use as a weapon.

In total, there are 12 active robots in the detachment. Typically, they are used for "training and simulation, apprehending criminals, critical incidents, exigent circumstances, executing a warrant, or during the evaluation of suspicious devices."
