In Sacramento, at a rally against police actions, more than 80 people were arrested

The mayor of Sacramento, Darrell Steinberg, is "very disappointed" that the protest over the decision of the district attorney to acquit the two policemen who shot the unarmed black man last year ended up with the arrest of more than 80 people who came out against the decision.

“I have many questions about what happened, why the crackdown and subsequent arrests occurred,” Steinberg wrote on Monday, March 4.

Mass arrests followed the march of demonstrators through East Sacramento. On Saturday, protesters protested against the decision of the district attorney of Sacramento County Marie Schubert that officers Terrance Mercadal and Jared Robinet would not be held criminally liable for the death of 22-year-old Stephon Clark. An independent review of the case showed that the police had used weapons legally.

When the demonstrators went back to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, the police began to disperse the crowd, but a small group continued to move to highway No.50, where the arrests began. According to local media reports, at least five patrol cars were filled with prisoners.

A reporter from The Sacramento Bee was also among those arrested. Steinberg condemned the arrest of the reporter "for doing his job." As a result, the reporter was released.

“I have many questions about what happened, why there was a crackdown and subsequent arrests,” he wrote on Twitter. “I will not comment further until I receive answers to these important questions this evening or tomorrow morning.” Regardless of the reasons why the crackdown was ordered, no member of the press should be detained for doing their job."
