Telegram banned in Russia: how to bypass a lock

The court of Moscow satisfied the claim of Roskomnadzor about blocking the Telegram messenger in Russia, the correspondent reports RIA News from the courtroom.

Roskomnadzor was allowed to carry out the decision of the court immediately, without waiting for the appeal. The Office intends to begin blocking after receiving the relevant court order.

Telegram lawyers did not appear at the meeting, saying that the founder of the messenger, Pavel Durov, forbade them to “legitimize an outright farce with their presence.” They plan to appeal the court's decision.

Bypass blocking using proxy servers

The Telegram manual in 2017 added to the messenger the ability to bypass blocking using proxy servers running the SOCKS5 protocol. This method is available in mobile versions of Telegram for iOs, Android and Windows Phone, as well as in a PC application. Proxy services allow you to redirect messenger traffic through third-party IP addresses that are not blocked in Russia.

You can switch from the default connection to the proxy through the Advanced Settings Telegram (Advanced Settings):

• go to the “Data and Storage” menu;
• Click on “Use Proxy”;
• select the type of connection SOCKS5 in the opened window;
• specify the settings of the foreign proxy server and port.

There are free and paid proxy services. The latter work more stable, support a higher speed and offer more countries through which you can connect. Free proxy services work for a short time, after which they are disabled and you need to look for new ones.

Telegram developers recommend that users choose the UK, Sweden, Germany and the United States, but there is a risk that the further the country is from Russia, the slower the connection occurs. VPN (Virtual Private Network - “virtual private network”) allows you to visit blocked sites and use applications as if the user is not in Russia. This can be either a separate program or a browser extension.

Among VPN clients for mobile devices, Opera VPN is known (for iOsFor Android), Onavo Protect (for iOsFor Android), CyberGhost (for iOsFor Android), VyprVPN (for iOsFor Android). Among the paid clients is Nord VPN (for iOsFor Android) and Express VPN (for iOsFor Android).

In addition, in 2017, a group of developers led by IT consultant of the Anti-Corruption Foundation Vladislav Zdolnikov released a bot for Telegram @TgVPNwhich allows for five dollars a month to get a high-speed VPN-connection directly in the messenger. For the bot to work under Windows, you need an OpenVPN client.

The built-in VPN is also available in the latest versions of the Opera browser - through it you can use the web version of the messenger.

How to bypass the blocking site Telegram

The site Telegram.org, which can also be blocked, the web version of the application is available. The easiest way to access the site is through browser extensions that change the user's IP address, for example, ZenMate or Freegate.

Earlier, Roskomnadzor blocked Zello, BlackBerry Messenger and Line applications, which refused to enter the distributor registry. Now they are available in Russia via VPN. At the same time, Roskomnadzor did not require the removal of these applications from the App Store and Google Play.

Even if Telegram is removed from the App Store, users of devices based on iOs will be able to access the application: if you download it in advance, it will remain in the shopping list. Android users will be able to download the installation file from third-party sites, for example, 4PDA.

Lawsuit Roskomnadzor

Roskomnadzor filed a lawsuit demanding to block Telegram on the sixth of April. The Office asked for immediate implementation of this measure if it won the case.

According to them, the companies were not given to familiarize themselves with the claim of Roskomnadzor, making it impossible to file objections to him and his evidence. The court rejected the petition.

Durov himself said that Telegram would not agree to the conditions of Roskomnadzor, since the messenger was in favor of freedom of speech and privacy.

Telegram was already on the verge of blocking at the end of June because of the refusal to provide Roskomnadzor with the information for entering into the register of information dissemination organizers, however, this did not happen.
