A plague center was discovered in a popular resort in Russia

In a mountain resort popular with Russians, the Ukok plateau, a plague center was identified. This was announced by the deputy director of the Altai anti-plague station Alexander Mishchenko at a meeting of the sanitary-anti-epidemic commission, writes Lenta.Ru.

As the official noted, in 2020, the station staff discovered plague epizootics in five areas of the region: in the vicinity of Zerlyukol-Nur and Karakul lakes, Sredin Chagan-Uzun, Kalgut Summit, Akalaha and Kalguty.

According to Mishchenko, the sanitary service is especially concerned about the discovery of an epizootic on the Ukok plateau in the Kosh-Agach region, bordering Mongolia, which is visited by thousands of tourists every year, and livestock breeders use it for winter grazing. According to him, there have been no cases of detection of plague strains in this place since 1958.

Mishchenko is also alarmed by the epidemiological situation in Mongolia, where ten cases of plague have already been registered with two deaths.

According to the expert, people become infected with the plague, first of all, when cutting marmots in the event of poaching them. In addition, you can catch a deadly disease through the bites of infected ticks and fleas that remain in the burrows of rodents after they die from the plague.

The regional department of Rospotrebnadzor reported that access to the Ukok plateau for tourists in the near future will be limited, and the Salyugem National Park located there will stop conducting excursions. “Serious preventive work” is being carried out in the Kosh-Agach region of the republic. More than 18 thousand people have been vaccinated.

Earlier in August it became known that in two districts of Tuva - in Mongun-Taiginsky and Ovyursky kozhuuns - a wide distribution of the plague pathogen was revealed, the total area of ​​meso foci was 340,1 square kilometers.

In July, it was reported that in the regions of Buryatia bordering Mongolia, they began to catch rodents and check for the presence of the plague microbe. Rospotrebnadzor clarified that the likelihood of bringing the plague from Mongolia or China is minimal, because the borders are closed due to the coronavirus, but there is a risk of spreading the infection from the territory of Tuva, Altai, Trans-Baikal Territory, where active natural foci of the disease are located.
