The latest edition of the Piped Water Database is officially online and ready for use by the general public. This free resource gives the public an idea of ​​what exactly is in their drinking water. How to use it and where to look, the publication said. Fox9.

Clean drinking water may be something we take for granted due to its availability, but this new database shows us that just because it meets the standards set by the EPA doesn't mean it's not contaminated.

This new database on tap water was compiled by the Environment Working Group (EWG). The database contains the tests that other drinking water agencies have conducted in public places and integrates them into a comprehensive website showing what contaminants are found and where.

For example, water in Los Angeles (California) contains 30 substances. The overall rating of the city is 10. Most of all in the water contains arsenic and bromates.

New York has a rating of 10. 18 substances were found in the water of the city, including bromodichloromethane and bromoform.

У Miami (Florida) rating 8. 24 substances were found in water, most of all arsenic and chromium.

In just the past two years, 56 new pollutants have been found in drinking water, including hazardous substances associated with a number of health problems. Among them are cancer, reproductive dysfunction, liver disease and others, writes The Guardian.

The list includes substances that have been produced and used for many years but are only now being monitored by regulatory authorities as their links to health problems are becoming apparent. Other pollutants include those that the industry is just starting to use in large quantities.

Other pollutants on the new list have been discovered by states seeking to impose stricter rules for chemicals.

In the meantime, there is little people can do other than find out what pollutants are present in their water systems, or buy filters and advocate for stricter regulations.
