In Poland, criminal liability for the accusation of Poles in the Holocaust was abolished.

The Lower House of the Polish Parliament (Diet) has canceled уголовное наказание for publicly accusing the Polish nation of involvement in the Holocaust, writes TASS.

The changes supported the 288 deputies, 25 opposed, 5 abstained.

Polish President Andrzej Dud approved the amendments to the law, said the head of his office, Krzysztof Schersky.

There are now no provisions for criminal liability in the law. Previously, the document fixed penalties of up to three years in prison for disseminating ideas about the guilt of the Polish people or state in the Holocaust. Punishment was also provided for statements about their involvement in crimes committed by the Third Reich. Such offenses include, in particular, the use of the wording “Polish concentration camps”. The document also prohibits propaganda of Bandera ideology in Poland and denial of genocide in Volyn.

The new version of the law will officially enter into force after publication.

In addition, it became known that Poland and Israel agreed on a joint declaration, which emphasizes the many years of cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries, recalling the work of the two groups engaged in the study of common history.

As noted by the Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Moravetsky, the country supports the study of the Holocaust, speaking out against the accusations of the Polish state or its people in the crimes of the Nazis.

“The Holocaust is an unprecedented crime of the Nazis. Poland has always been sensitive to the significance of the Holocaust. We believe that together we have a responsibility to research and preserve the history of the Holocaust,” he said, emphasizing Germany’s responsibility for the creation of concentration camps in Poland.

“We reject activities accusing Poland or the Polish people of the crimes of the Nazis and their accomplices,” said the head of the Polish government. Unfortunately, some people, regardless of nationality, faith and views, discovered their darkest side during those times,” added Morawiecki, emphasizing that many Poles helped Jews during World War II.

“We emphasize the freedom of historical research, including the Holocaust, without fear of legal consequences,” the Polish Prime Minister said. According to him, scientists, researchers, and journalists can safely implement their professional tasks.

The controversial norms of the law, adopted at the beginning of the year, led to a conflict in the relations of the republic with Israel, Ukraine and the United States. The Israeli side took the Polish law as a restriction of freedom of speech, which makes it impossible to openly discuss crimes committed against Jews during the Second World War, as well as an attempt to introduce punishment for testimony of the victims of the Holocaust. The Polish authorities, in response to criticism, sent the document to the Constitutional Court, which has not yet announced the decision.
