In the drinking water of Louisiana County, a lethal, brain-eating amoeba was found.

Naegleria fowleri, which causes fatal swelling of the brain and tissue destruction, was discovered on weekends in the suburb of Terrebonne, Louisiana, about an hour south of New Orleans, according to WWL-TV.

“I don’t like it because this is my home and I can’t do what I’m used to doing,” Lindsey Dupre told WWL-TV. “I want to know that I’m protected and that I won’t fall victim to the amoeba.”

A dangerous amoeba was found in all freshwater sources, including drinking water, pool water, and tap water.

The water is "perfectly safe to drink," said Michael Sobert of Consolidated Waterworks, "It is simply unsafe when it falls into the nasal cavity."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that brain infection usually occurs when people swim in areas where there is amoeba in the water or when drinking water enters the nose. Infection cannot occur due to drinking water.

To combat amoeba, officials stopped using chloramine and switched to chlorine, which more effectively destroys amoebae. However, this is only a temporary solution to the problem, which is aggravated by the high temperature of the air, which contributes to the reproduction of the unicellular organism.

Last June, the Terrebonna plumbing system also showed an amoeba during the study, which was also found in the 2015 year.

In the meantime, the Louisiana Department of Health advises residents to avoid water getting into their nose during a shower, to prevent children from playing with hoses, and not to dive in the bathroom or pool.
