Michigan man wins $842 million Powerball jackpot on New Year's Day

The winning Powerball numbers were white balls 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 and red Powerball 1. The Power Play multiplier was 3X.
The owner of a ticket sold in Michigan for the Powerball drawing matched all six numbers and won a whopping $842,4 million jackpot, Powerball officials said.
The Michigan Lottery website said the ticket was sold at the Food Castle of Grand Blanc, at 3035 E. Grand Blanc Road in Grand Blanc, about 100 miles from Detroit.

The lucky winner will have a choice between a lump sum of $425,2 million or an annuity of $842,4 million, officials said. They noted that the annuity option involves one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by five percent each year.
According to Powerball officials, it is the 10th largest jackpot ever won in the United States. And this is the first time the Powerball jackpot has been won on New Year's Day.
Powerball players in several other states also won big on Dec. 1: Four tickets sold in California, Connecticut, Florida and Maryland matched five numbers and won $1 million, while two tickets sold in Florida and Texas won $2 million.

The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24,9. Lottery officials say the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292,2 million. The next Powerball drawing, with a projected $20 million jackpot, will take place on December 3rd.
