In Pennsylvania, a giant snake tried to suffocate its owner: the cops had to shoot her

Police officers shot a man's pet snake after they arrived at a Pennsylvania home to find the snake wrapped around its owner's neck, knocking him unconscious, reports CNN.

A 28-year-old man is recovering in a hospital after being attacked. The wounded snake escaped and eventually died from his injuries, said Upper Macungie Township Police Department Lieutenant Peter Nickisher.

Nickisher said two police officers responded to a call at 14:12 p.m. on July 20 to a home in Vogelsville, Pennsylvania, a rural eastern town where a man reportedly went into cardiac arrest after a snake coiled around his throat.

He said that after entering the house, the officers encountered a family member. He took them to the owner, who lay unconscious, strangled by a snake. The length of the snake was at least 4,5 meters.

“It was a terrible situation,” Nikischer said. “Without a doubt, this was a life and death situation for this man.”

He said that when the officers peered into the corridor, they noticed a man lying across the doorway between the corridor and the room. The snake looked at the police. Nikischer said the officer fired one shot, hitting the snake's head, which was at a distance from the man due to its body length.

He said officers dragged the victim away from the snake into the living room, where several firefighters and rescuers performed emergency care before taking the man to the hospital.

The man kept the snake in the house as a pet, Nikischer said, and officers found two more snakes in the house.

He believes the police made an "instant decision" that saved the man's life. He said he was sure that otherwise the man would have died.

“We’ve had some pretty terrible calls in my career,” Nikischer said. “This one is definitely high on my list.”
