In New York, banned advertising short-term lease Airbnb

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo declared war on Airbnb, succumbing to pressure from the hotel industry, and signed one of the state’s toughest laws on settling rental housing.

State law already prohibits renting apartments for periods shorter than 30 days. The new act introduces a fine in the amount of $ 1000 to $ 7500 for advertising rental housing for up to a month.

The law actually draws Airbnb, FlipKey, HomeAway and other similar services to responsibility for assisting in the rental of property.

Airbnb admitted that these rules were ignored by thousands of users registered on the service. Previously, the company decided to make concessions so that the governor would not sign the law. The company proposed registering homeowners, which would allow tracking of tenants, as well as introducing a “one owner, one home” rule. Thus, one person would be able to rent out only one residential space.

Member of the state legislature and co-author Linda Rosenthal believes the signing of the law is a victory for New Yorkers who suffer from inflated prices for affordable housing, which is the result of Airbnb.

The company said that it was not going to sit idly by and had already filed a lawsuit. In it, Airbnb representatives argue that the new rules violate the company's constitutional right to free speech and also violate the federal Media Decency Act.

It is worth noting that the service has already stopped placing ads for more than 3 of thousands of real estate agencies and is ready to make concessions in case of a revision of the law.

New York State is the largest Airbnb market in the world. There are 45 offers registered in New York City itself and another 000 in other localities in the state.
