In New York, a law has entered into force that protects freelancers from possible non-payment by employers.

This is the first such regulation in the United States, writes Gothamist.

The document requires employers to fully pay for the work of freelancers, made in the amount of $ 800, either by the date specified in the contract, or within 30 days after the assigned task.

The law also provides for additional penalties for employers who refuse to pay.

According to the regulatory act, during 2 years after cheating, a freelancer may file a complaint with the City Labor Standards Office and the Department of Consumer Affairs. After this, the Director of the Department must prepare a certified letter to the employer within 20 days, informing them that he has broken the contract with the freelancer. At best, the law will influence employers before a freelancer goes to court with a lawsuit.

If, nevertheless, there is a recourse to the court, then the new law provides for double compensation for damage to the freelancer and the fee to his lawyers, if the judge decides in favor of the employee. However, the prospect of paying a lawyer can still be difficult for freelancers with a limited budget, although for this the Union of Freelancers launched the application Freelancers unionto associate workers with lawyers who specialize in such claims.

Freelancers make up a third of New York's workforce.

A report published in 2015 by the Union of Freelancers, said that over 70% of freelancers in New York have problems getting paid.
