New York launched a program to help small business owners, available to immigrants

Today, the administration of De Blasio announced the launch of a new program that will help small business owners to resolve issues related to renting. This is stated on Online City Hall.

The New York City Small Business Department offers a help program that will allow owners to get free legal assistance on key problem areas, including rent negotiations, settling landlord issues, responding to an eviction notice, breaking contractual disputes, and extending a lease. Those companies that do not belong to the franchise and meet the requirements for income can apply for this service.

“Small businesses are the economic heart and soul of this city, and they deserve every opportunity to succeed,” said Mayor de Blasio. “The Commercial Lease Assistance Program will provide small business owners with the help they need to resolve legal issues without putting them out of business.”

The new program offers its services in solving the problems of small business before they appear in court. The program does not represent clients in matters that are in court.

For this small business assistance program, $ 2,4 million was allocated from the city budget for two years. She will provide an average of 40 hours of legal services and a special lawyer to work with each business owner.

This program will help small business owners achieve successful results while avoiding the cost of a lawyer. These services are offered in partnership with Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation, Volunteers of Legal Services, and Urban Justice Center.

Small entrepreneurs who need help but cannot afford a lawyer are eligible for this program. Examples of businesses that may be eligible:

— small entrepreneurs are immigrants, women, veterans or members of minorities;

— hire local residents with low incomes;

— are located in areas with high poverty rates or provide educational opportunities.

Small business owners must visit nyc.gov/commlease or call 311 to determine eligibility and learn more. Services are available in ten languages, including: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Urdu, French and Polish.
