In New York, the public will present one of the most famous works of Leonardo da Vinci

2019 marks 500 since the death of Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519), one of the greatest artists of all time. In honor of this event, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will present to the public in New York one of Leonardo's masterpieces.

July 15 to October 6 will be on display in the Metropolitan Museum "The Prayer of St. Jerome", the creation of which the artist started about 1483 year. In the US, the picture will be brought from Vatican museums for a while, writes Time-out.

The canvas depicts Saint Jerome (347 – 420), one of the key theologians of the early Christian church, during the two-year period of his life when he lived as a hermit in a desert in Syria. Leonardo portrayed him sitting with a stone in one hand, which, according to his ancestors, he beat on his chest during moments of repentance. Legend has it that the lion curled up in front of Jerome in the picture became his companion after the Saint took a thorn from the paw of an animal.

As a prominent Renaissance man, Leonardo had many interests, including science, weapon design, and trying to understand the mechanics of flight. Supposedly, this distracted him from his art because he sometimes "rushed" his art projects, which had a less than positive effect on them. A prime example is The Last Supper, which began to deteriorate almost immediately after Leonardo abandoned traditional fresco painting methods in favor of a process he invented. He left many works unfinished, among them was “The Prayer of St. Jerome.” As disappointing as this may seem to lovers of Leonardo's work, it has been a boon to art historians seeking to understand the master's working methods. Even unfinished, this painting shows Da Vinci at the height of his powers and is certainly worth seeing during a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
