In New York, raise the price for travel on the subway

Starting from 22 in March 2015, the price of travel in public transport in New York (subway and buses) will rise to 2,75 dollars per trip. Today it is 2,50 dollar.

The decision to raise prices took the board of the New York City Transportation Authority (Metropolitan Transportation Authority, MTA) last week.

The price of a monthly pass will increase to $116,50 from $112, and a weekly pass will increase from $30 to $31.

However, not all news for passengers is bad, according to ITA representatives. Thus, the bonus that they receive when replenishing their MetroCard card will be increased to 11% for every 5,50 dollars.

The Head of the Transport Directorate, Thomas Prendergast, also assured that the increase in the fare means “an increase in the quality of public transport and quality of service”.

“These measures will ensure that New York City's transportation system remains reliable, safe and that residents can always rely on,” says Prendergast.

Due to the increase in fares for 4% in the next two years, MTA will receive additional funds in the amount of 467 million dollars, which will be used to improve transport operations.

In two years - in 2017 - the price of the metro will apparently rise again, but by how much is still unknown.

In addition to the price of travel on the subway and buses will increase the fee for the passage of bridges and tunnels under the authority of the Transport Department. The fare on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and the Queens-Midtown Tunnel will go up 50 cents and make 8 dollars in one direction.

By the way, in 1948, a subway ride cost only 10 cents, reaching 50 cents in 1975 and one dollar in 1986. In 1995, its price rose to $1,50, to $2 in 2003, and to $2,50 in 2013.
