50 football fields for youth to be built in New York
New York City FC is partnering with Mayor Bill De Blasio, the Foundation for a Better New York City, the USA Soccer Foundation and Adidas to launch the Soccer City program in New York City. According to it, 50 football fields will be built in the city in 5 years through public and private investments.
“The new soccer fields will play an important role in keeping New York's youth safe, active and connected to the community. Through this partnership, we will tackle inequality in all its forms—including in parks and playgrounds,” De Blasio said. “In a city of immigrants, with many languages and cultures, this initiative will be one of the best ways to unite young New Yorkers.”
About $ 3 million will be invested in the program. The fields will be built in all five districts of the city, as well as provide their year-round maintenance. They will organize out-of-class meetings, festivals and youth meetings to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.
It has already been decided where the first eight football fields will be built:
- JHS 166 George Gershwin - Brooklyn, DOE.
- Cypress Hills Houses, Brooklyn, NYCHA.
- Irwin Altman Middle School 172, Queens, DOE.
- South Jamaica Houses, Queens, NYCHA.
- Millbrook Playground, Bronx, Parks.
- Eagle Academy For Staten Island, DOE.
- Harlem Lane Playground, Manhattan, Parks.
- PS 083 Luis Munoz Rivera, Manhattan, DOE.
