In New York, commemorated victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine
In New York, St. Patrick's Cathedral hosted an event in honor of the memory of the victims of the Holodomor 1932-1933 in Ukraine with the participation of people who survived those terrible events, as well as their families.
About it on the page on a social network Facebook The Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA Valery Chaly reported.
During his speech at this event, the Ukrainian diplomat noted that in 2018, the next US Congress is expected to vote on the recognition of the Holodomor as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people. The previous attempt failed, but Chaly expressed the hope that next year a resolution recognizing the Holodomor as a genocide of Ukrainians would be adopted.
“Today, in my speech to the surviving witnesses of those tragic events, I emphasized: the time has come for the United States to officially recognize the Holodomor against the Ukrainian people as genocide. There has already been an attempt. Unsuccessful. But we will go to the US Congress again to achieve truth and justice and adopt a corresponding resolution next year,” Chaly said.
On the anniversary of the tragedy, the US State Department issued a special statement, writes "Voice of America".
“This month we remember and honor the memory of the millions of Ukrainians who died of starvation in the early 1930s, as a result of Stalin’s brutal policy,” the statement said. “The barbarous seizure of land and crops, which led to the Holodomor .... was one of the most cruel decisions in the twentieth century, which turned one of the granaries of Europe into a place of the most terrible suffering.”
The US diplomatic service noted that on this day not only the memory of the victims of this tragedy should be honored, but also the power of the people of Ukraine should be remembered.
“The Soviet regime failed to destroy the identity and independence of Ukrainians,” the State Department said.
“The United States confirms that it supports the Ukrainians on the day when we remember this tragedy organized by the Soviet regime and condemn attempts to deny this historical fact,” the statement said. “We also reaffirm our promises to maintain a safe and prosperous Ukraine, free from external aggression and occupation, which can choose its own future.”
