In New York, a minivan rammed a group of pedestrians
An 70-year-old minivan driver crashed into a crowd of pedestrians in Manhattan on Monday night, injuring six and killing one person.
The driver, who the police later identified as Henry Herman, lost control of the vehicle while trying to park near Canal and Forsyt Street near 19: 00, the NYPD reported. The minivan drove onto the sidewalk, where he crushed one person and wounded six other pedestrians. Two of them were seriously injured, and four others were injured, not threatening their lives. They were taken to Bellevue Hospital.
It became known later that the victims were 56-year-old Chun Dan Zhang, a resident of Queens. Two other victims at the scene refused medical assistance.
Herman was arrested on Monday evening on charges of failing to give way to pedestrians and not showing due caution.
The mayor of De Blasio responded to the accident by writing a twitter about the full investigation of the incident.
“We cannot accept the loss of life on our streets as inevitable,” he wrote. “We will continue to work every day to achieve #VisionZero.”
