Four children died of flu in New York

Against the background of a high level of flu disease in New York, 4 of childhood deaths was recorded in January. It is reported by the State Department of Health in New York.

Cases of flu have peaked on both coasts. 15 childhood deaths were reported throughout the country during this flu season, the CDC reported last week.

The residents of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania suffered the most.

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said that despite the tragedy of deaths, they are not unusual during the season of illness.

The New York State Department of Health does not report children's age and vaccination information.

“Every year, our children's emergency room comes to children who were apparently healthy but then became seriously ill with the flu,” Schaffner said. “The lesson is that flu can affect even healthy children.”

Over the entire previous season, influenza activity in the US has recorded 89 deaths associated with the influenza virus, according to CDC.

Public health experts were concerned about the rate of vaccination, as pediatricians could not always vaccinate children against the flu. This is due to the fact that this year there were no recommendations on the use of a nasal flu spray, as it was found to be less effective than vaccine injections.

"It is clear that the large majority of children who die from the flu every year have not been vaccinated," Schaffner said, clarifying that he was speaking generally and not about the latest deaths in New York.

Influenza can cause headache, fever, joint pain and cough. Seasonal flu usually spreads throughout the United States from November to March, and often peaks in February.

The number of people who suffer from the flu each year can vary widely, but in general, the CDC reports that "millions of people get sick, hundreds of thousands are hospitalized, and thousands or tens of thousands of people die from the flu every year." Children under one year of age are at high risk of developing complications from the flu.
