In New York, two trains knocked down a car at the crossing: three dead
Three people were killed and nine were injured on February 26, when the car was hit by two trains on the Long Island Railway, running in opposite directions.
At the time of the accident, the car was crossing the railroad crossing in Westbury, New York, after traveling around the barrier beams hoping to slip in front of the train, writes CNN.
Three dead were in the car, among the wounded were seven train passengers, a conductor and an engineer. The injured were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.
“This is a very tragic warning story about not trying to outrun train. It won't work,” said Nassau County government spokeswoman Laura Curran.
The first blow was struck by a train heading eastward, which departed from Westbury station and carried about 100 people.
Then the car was hit by a train moving westward, which was traveling at a higher speed and was carrying about 800 people. As a result of the collision, the two front cars of this train derailed and hit the platform at Westbury station.
In addition, about 200 feet of track, the third gauge and Westbury station platform were damaged due to the accident.
Repair work was carried out all night to restore normal operation of the tracks and the station as soon as possible.
