Frightening statistics: in New York, children are increasingly bringing weapons to school

Parents of young New Yorkers have every right to worry about the safety of their children in educational institutions: the arming of city school students has reached a five-year high. “Children bring guns to school knowing that others have already done so,” is how security experts explain the situation.

State Department of Education statistics show that during the 2017-2018 school year, school security personnel confiscated a total of X-NUMX "dangerous tools" (that is, firearms and melee weapons), New York Post. This is on 27% more than 2292 seizures throughout the city in 2013-2014.

A representative of the Department of Education insisted that the increase in arming of schoolchildren is the result of improved work by security forces. But how did the weapons get past school security?

On the contrary, the head of the union of security agents, Greg Floyd, told The Post: "This should be a signal of alarm, since the children are arming themselves, knowing that their peers are armed."

The largest number of guns seized was at Frederick Douglass Academy HS in Manhattan, with 24 guns, compared with just four guns seized at the school in the previous four years. Queens' Metropolitan HS followed with 4 units, followed by Brooklyn's Progress HS for Professional Careers (20) and DeWitt Clinton in the Bronx (18).

Even Brooklyn Tech students, one of the city’s best schools, confiscated 16 weapons, after just 12 in the previous four years. At Edward R. Murrow HS in Midwood, 11 units were seized.

These figures were made public against the background of how the city continues to soften school discipline and is considering withdrawing security agents from the New York police, while the city’s authorities, according to the publication, are mainly focused on the racial reengineering of various schools.

The New York Post encourages parents to be on their guard, at least until the city’s management makes school safety an important priority.
