In New York, a fraud lawyer lured money from Russian-speaking immigrants
The fraudster under the guise of a Russian-speaking lawyer in Brooklyn went against the orders of the prosecutor to stop using the naivety and gullibility of Russian immigrants, posing as a lawyer, and extort money from them, reports New York Daily News.
In 2015, Mikhail Perlov appeared before the court, where he was ordered to pay $ 40 thousand and was forbidden to impersonate a lawyer.
31-year-old Mikhail Perlov is accused of having stolen over $ 50 thousand from several victims between January 2013 and August 2016, posing as a lawyer.
One of his alleged victims is a 78-year-old immigrant who shelled out $20 in legal fees for a non-existent civil suit.
“This type of fraud is especially egregious as it affects those who need legal assistance. My colleagues will remain vigilant against scammers who operate in immigrant communities, especially at a time of heightened fear and anxiety,” said State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
Perlov found and deceived his clients in an office on Sheepshead Bay, and also placed advertisements through the Russian-language newspaper Russian Advertising. New York Daily News publishes an example of Perlov's ad:
“We will discuss this issue with the Prosecutor General's Office,” said Perlov's lawyer Alan Abramson.
If Perlov is found guilty, he faces from 2 to 7 years in prison.
The investigation is ongoing, and if you have any information regarding this case, or if you are a victim of a fraud lawyer, contact the state attorney’s office at (212) 416-8758. The department has Russian-speaking specialists who can help those who do not speak English.
