In New York, arrested cheater who profited from immigrants

Fraudster Juan Zedillo promised illegal immigrants in Yonkers, New York, to speed up the process of obtaining American citizenship, saying that he has serious connections with federal agencies that will help speed up their application.

He even had a business card of a famous group - United States Counter Insurgents Association of Justice.

However, all that Zedillo could do, according to the police, is to help families part with their money. He took $ 5000 for membership in his organization and another $ 3000 for the application.

Zedillo promised to help clients get a U type visa and legal status. But all he did was submit a claim that clients could do themselves. In addition, the documents indicated false and incomplete information. None of his clients received the promised visa or changed their legal status.

Yonkers police launched an investigation into the fraudster after the victims reported their suspicions to Latin American defense groups.

Juan Zedillo is now accused of stealing a third degree. Police counted 42 families who were the victims of a fraudster. Over the past five years, he has received more than $ 300 thousand.

“[Zedillo] was a man who preyed on those who wanted to achieve the American dream and become U.S. citizens,” Mayor Mike Spano said at a news conference at St. Peter's Church. “By selling them hope and the promise of a better life, he instead deceived them and set them up for disappointment.”

“He promised so much, and we thought he would help us,” said Maria Sanchez, the victim in the grand larceny case. “But we didn’t get anything.”

Sanchez and her husband are from Mexico. They paid $ 5000 to apply for US citizenship after their friend introduced Zedillo. The couple have two daughters and a son. They were all born in the USA.

They were sure that they were deceived when nothing happened in four years. However, later, in 2017, Zedillo reappeared in their lives and said that he was ready to process applications. They paid him another $ 3000, but refused to pay another $ 800 when he asked them about it last month.

“We want justice. He’s in jail, but that won’t help us,” Sanchez said. “We’re calmer now that he’s been jailed, but we want what he promised.”

Zedillo lived in Olympia, Washington. Police said the fraudster’s criminal history has documented fraud checks in Texas, Kansas and Missouri since the 1970s. The police have not yet come to a conclusion, as he ended up in Yonkers.

Police Commissioner Charles Gardner and community advocates called on undocumented immigrants who might have been victims, not to be afraid and to report a crime.

“If you call our police department for help, no one will ask about your immigration status,” Spano said. “I need you to believe this.” They are here to serve you and protect you."
