4 July in New York 200 candidates from 50 countries received US citizenship

On Wednesday, July 4, about 200 citizenship candidates gathered at the New York Public Library.

The group, which included representatives from 50 countries, went through a long process of naturalization.

“I feel proud today,” said Mohammed Rateda Akter, 33, of the Bronx, holding her 7-month-old daughter, Fahamida. “It’s good that I’m a US citizen.”

Before obtaining citizenship, candidates had to fulfill a number of requirements, including a demonstration of the ability to speak, read, write and understand English, and to be a lawful permanent resident, as well as a person with "good moral character".

Family members of candidates were close at this solemn moment, when they voiced their names and they received certificates.

“I want to vote, I want to save the country,” said Pascaline Beniacru, 39, who came from Ivory Coast in West Africa. — I really like this place. It's a peaceful place where if you work hard you can live well."

Becoming a citizen, X-NUMX-year-old Dervan Victorin from Saint Lucia can move from the reserves of the US Army to permanent service.

“Words can’t explain how I feel right now,” said Victorin, who lives in the Bronx. - I am amazed. It's a great feeling."

The emotional ceremony was imbued with patriotism. The name of each candidate, as well as the name of each country, was read aloud. Together with another video for the song “God Bless the USA”, they showed a congratulatory video from President Donald Trump.

According to officials, the majority of new citizens at the ceremony came from the Dominican Republic, followed by Bangladesh, China, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago.
