In New Jersey, dangerous jellyfish appeared

In connection with the start of the beach season, officials issued a new warning about poisonous jellyfish in New Jersey.

According to the State Department of Environmental Protection, dozens of poisonous jellyfish have been discovered in the Shrewsbury River in Monmouth County.

The department reports that the jellyfish, the size of a coin, stings very painfully and may in some cases lead to hospitalization.

This particular species is native to the Pacific and tends to attach under water to vegetation and algae.

Anyone who makes his way through aquatic vegetation should take precautions in protecting his feet.

If you are stung by a cross jellyfish, officials recommend that you do the following:

• Treat the affected area with vinegar to immobilize the remaining stinging cells;
• Rinse the bite area with salt water and remove the remaining tentacles with gloves or a simple towel;
• After that, apply a hot compress or ice to relieve pain;
• If pain increases, not decreases, seek medical attention.
