New Jersey hospital accidentally transplanted kidney to wrong patient

A patient from New Jersey was accidentally placed at the top of the organ transplant list and received a kidney for another patient who, it turned out, had the same name. Writes about it New York Post.

Miraculously, the patient was compatible with the “new” organ—and the intended recipient also received a kidney, but later.

The medical mix-up occurred at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes in Camden, the only facility in southern New Jersey that performs kidney, liver and pancreas transplants.

Hospital authorities reported that on November 18, a successful transplant was performed to an 51-year-old patient whose name is not known.

The next day, the hospital realized that the organ was intended for someone else, but "it is unusual that the patient who was supposed to receive the organ has the same name and the same age."

“A member of the clinical team discovered that this patient was inadvertently given a transplant from the priority order based on the relevant United Network Organ Transplant list,” the hospital said.

Fortunately, a person who accidentally had a kidney transplant "was compatible with the organ and feels good."

According to officials, a patient with the same name, who was supposed to receive the first kidney, also received a kidney after 6 days and “feels good”.

Both patients were notified of the error.

Reginald Bleiber, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Virtua, called this mistake “an unprecedented event in our transplant program, which is more than 40 years old.”

“We have a deep responsibility to the people who literally put their lives in our hands. Errors of this magnitude are rare, and despite the unusual circumstances of similar patient identifiers, additional verification would have prevented this error, Blaber said. “As a healthcare organization, we immediately introduced additional security measures and increased controls to ensure this situation does not reoccur.”
