In Nevada, there is an invasion of grasshoppers: insects have covered roads, buildings and are crawling into people’s homes.

Mormon crickets, which are actually cannibalistic grasshoppers, have invaded Nevada. The invasion of insects in too large numbers frightened people: grasshoppers crawled through homes, businesses and roads, reports Yahoo.

“It was literally the worst day of my life. Well, maybe not the worst, but definitely, by far, the most disgusting," Colette Reynolds said in a viral TikTok video showing Mormon crickets clustered around her house - on the sidewalk, walls and in the grass.

"I'm really scared to go inside because they're jumping in there too," she said, calling the insect invasion "absolutely disgusting."

In the next video, a man uses a blower to remove bugs from his front door while he takes out packages.

“Oh, thank God, my hero is here,” she says.

As the video shows, one city in northeastern Nevada, Elko, survived an invasion of abhorrent proportions.

“You can see them moving and crawling and the whole road is crawling and it just gives you goosebumps,” said Elko resident Stephanie Garrett. “This is so disgusting.”

In the interest of safety, state employees have been clearing roads near Elko to clear them of dead Mormon crickets, the Nevada Department of Transportation said.

While these insects can't actually harm humans, they can and have destroyed crops by eating the plants, according to the University of Nevada. And if there are no plants nearby to eat, Mormon crickets will simply feast on each other.

On top of that, when crushed, they tend to give off a particularly strong and unpleasant odor.

“Not only do Mormon crickets eat plants and cause damage, their presence can be harmful,” says a study from the University of Arizona. “Structures and landscaping may become superficially stained with feces or crushed crickets, creating cleanup costs for property managers of condominiums, parks, golf courses, etc., or home owners.”

Outbreaks of Mormon cricket in such numbers typically last 4 to 6 years and are gradually reduced naturally by predators, Nevada entomologist Jeff Knight said. In the meantime, residents can only endure.

“A lot of people don't like big scary, nasty-looking insects. By adulthood, these things become the size of your thumb,” he said. “So when you have a couple hundred or a couple thousand of them in your yard, it can be quite intimidating for some people.”
