Biometric verification of passengers is introduced at several US airports.
At Hartsfield-Jackson-Atlanta International Airport and Denver Airport, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will introduce biometric authentication check points. Innovations will start this week.
TSA will test the concept, assess the impact and safety of using biometrics to verify the identity of passengers using fingerprints.
Biometric authentication technology allows travelers to use fingerprints as a boarding pass and as an identity document.
The technology that TSA workers will use is consistent with that used when checking-in passengers in the TSA PreP® program.
As soon as the technology finds a similar fingerprint, the system reads the passenger’s boarding pass information through Secure flight. Participation on a voluntary basis, and all passengers who participate, will undergo standard document verification procedures, will show their boarding pass and an identity document.
“TSA is looking at technologies and intelligence capabilities that allow us to analyze and protect passengers and their property,” said TSA Assistant Administrator Steve Karoly of the Office of Requirements and Capabilities Analysis. “Through these and other technology demonstrations, we are committed to innovating and improving safety performance to prevent the growing threat and ensure passengers travel safely.”
In the long run, this technology can automate the process of checking travel documents, eliminating the need for a boarding pass and an identity document, and allowing or denying travelers access to a checkpoint through an electronic gate.
During this data collection period, passengers using TSA Pre ✓ lines may voluntarily present their fingerprints on the contact or contactless fingerprint scanning unit.
TSA Pre ✓® passengers who did not provide fingerprints to TSA through the TSA PreP® application program are also encouraged to use this system, since it provides valuable information to TSA during proof of concept.
The TSA will analyze data collected during the test period for potential implementation at other US airports in the future.
