In a national park in California, a tourist fell off a cliff and crashed to death

A tourist died after falling from a height of 500 feet (more than 150 meters) from a summit in California's Sequoia National Park, writes NBC News.

The National Park Service said the woman also fell after trying to grab a man who had fallen off. She survived.

On Tuesday, June 1, authorities said a tourist died in California's Sequoia National Park on Memorial Day after flying 500 feet (over 150 meters) from the ridge of the summit and crashing to his death.

According to the National Park Service, a 56-year-old man from San Jose was with two other people when he lost his balance.

One of them, a 45-year-old woman from Milpitas, California, also fell after trying to grab the man, the agency said. She survived a fall from a height of 30 feet (9 meters), officials said.

The third person in the group used a satellite beacon to declare an emergency before calling 911 on his cell phone, the National Park Service said in a statement.

A helicopter from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, joined by other rescue teams, was already in the area, answering a call about an unconscious traveler, the agency said. The brigades rescued an injured woman from a ledge and took her to Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop, California.

She was later taken to a hospital in Reno, Nevada, where she underwent surgery. It is unclear how serious her injuries were and what her condition is.

Before the rescue began, authorities confirmed that the man had died in the fall. The tourist's body was found on Tuesday, June 1, by rescuers from the Mount Russell area and taken to the funeral home.

The names of the tourists were not disclosed.
