Mississippi allowed denial of service to LGBT people

The US Supreme Court upheld Mississippi law allowing businesses and government officials to deny service to members of the LGBT community if required by their religious beliefs.

The law has not yet entered into force, as the litigation lasted, but in the near future a new regulatory act of the state will take effect, according to CS Monitor.

Earlier, a lawsuit by human rights defenders and LGBT activists against Mississippi, requiring the repeal of the law, was considered by a court in Louisiana, and the court of first instance decided that the law was legitimate. Now this decision is confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs claim that they intend to continue the fight. According to them, after the start of the law and the first denials of service on it, people who have received these refusals will be more likely to prove in court that their rights have been violated and that the law will be annulled.

The regulation was passed in Mississippi in 2016, the majority of the state parliament are representatives of the Republican Party, Governor Philip Bryant also belongs to this political force, he signed the law shortly after its adoption. This was the state’s response to a US Supreme Court decision that legitimizes same-sex marriage across the country.

Proponents of the document call it a law on religious freedom, which protects the sincere religious and moral beliefs of people and the business representative. Opponents of the law accuse him of discriminating LGBT people, as well as violating equality guaranteed by the Constitution for all US citizens.
