Two people in Michigan contract swine flu after attending agricultural fairs
Two people have contracted flu strains that normally circulate among pigs, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said. Most likely, the reason for this was the exhibition of pigs at agricultural fairs. Writes about it CNN.
Each patient became ill with flu-like symptoms about 10 days after attending pig shows at two different agricultural fairs in early and late July. None of them, the CDC said, were hospitalized, their infection did not spread to other people.
Both cases were identified by the Michigan Department of Health. There are several such cases every year in the US, usually associated with pig shows at fairs.

However, the diseases highlight the possibility that influenza viruses are able to cross from animals such as birds and pigs to humans. Usually such cases do not cause additional problems, because the viruses are adapted to infect other species. But since there is always the possibility that such a spread could cause widespread illness, the agency says they are always fully monitoring and investigating such cases.
The CDC reminds people planning a trip to an agricultural fair not to eat or drink near areas where pigs are housed, to avoid contact with animals that appear sick, and most importantly to wash and sanitize their hands after visiting areas where pigs are housed.
