A police officer bought a Christmas dinner for a family caught stealing food, says New York Post.

When a Massachusetts police officer saw a list of items the two women had tried to steal from a grocery store five days before Christmas, their situation touched his heart.
“It was only food,” he noted.
So instead of arresting them, he bought a $ 250 gift card to pay for Christmas dinner.
Officer Matt Lima of the Somerset Police Department paid for dinner after responding to a call from a local Stop and Shop. There he saw two women with children - the family was caught after they bypassed the scanner at the self-service counter and put several products directly into their bags.
"I have two daughters that are about the same age as the kids that were there, so it blew my mind," Lima told local NBC affiliate WJAR.

He was touched when he learned that the mother of these children was unemployed and the food they stole was for a festive dinner.
“There was nothing like health and beauty products, shampoo or anything like that. Just food,” he said. “I just tried to put myself in the shoes of this family and show some empathy.”
The store administration issued a ban on entry to two women.
Somerset Police Chief George McNeill praised the officer in a statement that said, "This incident is a true testament to the outstanding character and decision-making ability of the Lima officer."
