Sexually confirmed infection with Zika virus in Miami

The Zika virus, which caused a panic in Miami last summer, returned, but only as a single sexually transmitted event caused by a mosquito bite in another country, the Florida Department of Health reported on Friday.

Although the patient has not traveled lately, officials said that the victim’s partner had visited Cuba several times, which is still fighting the mosquito bite virus.

The couple lives in Miami-Dade County, but the health department did not indicate where. Both tested positive for Zika virus.

Although there is no evidence of an active spread of Zika virus in Florida, officials warn state residents to take precautions if they or their partners have recently traveled.

“If the department identifies an area that has active Zika transmission, we immediately notify the public,” the department said.

In 2017, the first cases of Zika virus infection in Florida occurred in Pinellas County. As in Miami-Dade, a man who contracted Zika through sex did not travel outside the state, but his partner recently visited Cuba and became infected. Both people tested positive for Zika 1 August virus.

Miami became the first city in the United States to experience the active spread of the virus last summer, after cases of infection were reported in the country.

This year in Florida, 205 cases of Zika infection transmission have been reported. Of these, 172 is related to travel, and only one was acquired in Florida.

Compared to the year 2016, when public health authorities reported 1 456 infections in Florida's 45 zones, Ziki’s threat was significantly reduced.

The outbreak of the virus began in Brazil in the 2015 year and quickly spread across the Caribbean, which led to a surge in serious birth defects in babies born to mothers infected with Zika during pregnancy.

About four out of five people who are infected with Zika do not feel the symptoms. There is no vaccine for the virus.

To prevent mosquitoes from reproducing, officials recommend draining standing water, using mosquito nets, and being particularly careful in case of a bite.
