In the zone of one of the most dangerous faults in California, a strong earthquake

The earthquake struck the Newport Inglewood Fault Zone. The Newport Inglewood Fault has long been considered one of the most dangerous seismic activity zones in Southern California, as it runs under some of the region’s most populated areas, from Westside in Los Angeles to the coast of Orange County.

The Newport-Inglewood Fault was responsible for the deadliest earthquake in modern Southern California history, the 6,4 magnitude 1933 Long Beach earthquake that killed about 120 people.

It is now known that this fault is associated with the Rose Canyon fault system that crosses San Diego.

According to the latest three-year data, an average of five earthquakes occur in the Los Angeles area with magnitudes of 3,0 to 4,0 points per year.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 7,4 miles (11,9 km).
