In Los Angeles, found a way to fight the heat

In Los Angeles, where in summer the temperature usually exceeds 35 degrees Celsius, they found a way to fight the heat. Workers put on the sidewalks a special coating that cools the streets.

According to Voice of America, gray paint, which is called “cool pavement,” reflects sunlight and reduces the temperature of the road surface several times. Jeff Luzar, commercial director of the company Guardtop, told exactly how the cooling coating works:

“Dark asphalt is heated to 44 degrees Celsius. We covered the pavement with one layer of our cooling coating, we will apply the second layer a bit later, and the temperature of the asphalt dropped to 36 degrees. The difference in 8 degrees.

Los Angeles became the first city in California to test the new coating, first in parking lots.

“We are the first California city to experiment with coating. We started with parking lots and then applied it to city roads. Now we hope to inspire other cities to do similar experiments and hope that the manufacturer will come up with other cooling innovations. In theory, the market for such pavements could be huge,” said Greg Spotts, vice president of highways and transportation for Los Angeles.

The city is also closely watching how quickly the new coating gets dirty.

So far, only the test sections of the roads have been processed, the researchers want to trace how the coating behaves before applying it everywhere.
